Blackburn’s Derbyshire: I almost joined Man Utd

Derbyshire said: “I went to Old Trafford with my old manager from Great Harwood, where I played at the time.

“It was an experience but I always knew in my heart I wanted to sign for Blackburn as it’s my club and I’ve always been a fan.

“United and Everton were offering me a contract but there was only one place I wanted to end up – here.

“I grew up watching Blackburn. Alan Shearer was my big hero and he was a huge role model for me on and off the pitch.

“I’ve scored goals in a short period of time and I’m delighted if people want to think I’m such a good player – but hopefully I can take it on even further.”

Blackburn boss Mark Hughes said: “If United come calling you have to be a strong-minded individual to resist it and I think he made the right decision.

“This is his club and I think it’s important to have players in your side who have a passion for the club they play for.

“He’s refreshing in his outlook and we like the lad – he always has a smile on his face.

“At the moment he’s riding the wave.”
