Newcastle veteran keeper Steve Harper joined Brighton on a month’s loan earlier this week and Poyet is now keen for Smith to follow him to the south coast.
The Daily Star reports that Poyet believes Smith can revive his side, who have struggled in recent games.
Smith’s current contract with Newcastle is set to expire at the end of the season.
