Cathcart has failed to recover from a back injury that he sustained while playing for Blackpool in the 2-1 victory over Liverpool.
The 21-year-old did not feature for Northern ireland in the clash with Italy on Friday.
Northern Ireland remain unbeaten in the Euro 2012 qualifying Group C.
