The 25 year old collapsed in a cup game with Real Union in 2008 and has not played for Los Merengues since.

The Spaniard, who was in Spain’s squad which won Euro 2008, wanted to remain a player but instead he is moving on to become a part of the club’s coaching staff.

This is the latest blow for Spanish football’s fight against heart problems, after the deaths of Antonio Puerta and Dani Jarque in recent seasons and the collapse last month of Miguel Garcia, all due to heart problems.
