The 21-year-old admits he is willing to play on loan in the Championship this season.
The youngster spent time on loan with Cardiff City and Watford last season.
“I don’t know (about my future),” Drinkwater told United’s official website. “I have to speak to the gaffer (Sir Alex Ferguson).
“I’ll maybe go back on loan to try and prove myself in the Championship and follow in some of the other lads’ footsteps.
“There’s a lot of centre-midfield players at the club. They are all quality players so it is difficult to break through.”
