England legend Shearer: Owen does not have anything to prove

The Toon legend said: “I don’t think Michael has a point to prove to anyone.

“With his ability and the years he has been around we know he is a great goalscorer.

“I am sure he will go out and score goals, just like he always has done during his career.

“Michael would not be out there if he is playing through the pain barrier and will only play if he is 100 per cent fit.

“He wanted to play for Newcastle against Everton last week. He came on as a substitute, scored and looked very sharp. That should set him up nicely for the next two games.

“I had a similar operation and was back playing again within 10 days. I didn’t feel any pain whatsoever and have not felt any since. Fingers crossed it will be the same for him.

“I understand the situation from both parties. Sam Allardyce wants Michael fit and playing for Newcastle. Steve McClaren wants Michael fit and scoring goals because he is England’s best goalscorer.

“It is a tough situation but certainly not a new one.”
