The arguments of financial fair play are well rehearsed, with the most prominent argument against it being that forcing clubs to only spend what they earn would entrench the gap between the richest clubs and the rest. Samuelson responded to this point by commenting that the advantages of the fair play initiative outweighed the negative aspects.
“There is a real danger that in effect the 92 teams will appear in the order of their attendances and fundraising ability. I think whilst that is true, you’ll have much more chance of another Brian Clough coming through. That would make it more exciting.”
Samuelson pointed out that whilst AFC Wimbledon were rated around 14th in the Blue Square Premier Division in terms of revenue, the club was over performing considering its budget. The opportunity for another Nottingham Forest or Derby to come through and over perform will be boosted by the fair play initiative.
