He said: “My dad (Paul Hendrie) has always played a big role with my contracts and it will be the same again.
“He spoke to Derby last Sunday and thinks there might be something there for me.
“Derby didn’t want to make any decisions until after the play-off final. They have gone up to the Premiership so that would be a good option.
“I would love to stay in the Premiership although I am not saying I wouldn’t drop down to the Championship if need be.”
Hendrie added: “Football comes before money and always has in my career. Other people get on with the contract side of things.
“It’s vital I get this contract right. It’s a big one for me and might be my last.
“I’d like a three-year deal. Nobody is paying for me. I am going from Villa on a free transfer and I will just be walking in somewhere.”
