The 19-year-old has been training with Ipswich since November.
Yao has signed a deal that will keep him at Portman Road until the end of the season.
Ipswich manager Roy Keane told BBC: “He’s got a good attitude and is a good athlete. He’s still young but we just want to give him a chance.”
