Boumsong said on French television programme Stade 2: “I do not think that the existing sanctions are a deterrent.
“Stopping football is OK, but if it’s just a symbolic gesture it won’t be useful.
“Something tangible is needed and we must talk about it, like we did in France following the death of the Paris Saint-Germain fan.”
On racist chants, the former Newcastle United ace said: “In every game away from the Stadio Olimpico they sing these kind of chants. I played in England and this never happens there. The model to follow is the English one.”
