Liverpool boss Benitez: Valencia background crucial to success in Barcelona

Benitez said: “With Valencia we were a very good team playing effectively on the counter-attack, and we (Liverpool) were trying to do the same thing. We were trying to be compact and narrow.

“We started really well (against Barcelona), then we had 10-15 minutes without control, the second half was much better from the team. We had more possession and were creating more chances, and giving their defence more problems.”

Benitez insists it was his plan to win the match in Barcelona.

He said: “The idea was to play for a win…. sometimes you cannot do that.

“After the first half hour, and after we have scored, we have gained confidence.

“We talked about this in the dressing room, we said if we can keep the ball we will have chances. We had more patience in the second half.

“We can win games away from home easily if we work hard, and today you could see all the players working really hard.

“If you want to win games like this against very good teams then you have to work really hard.”
