The Evening Chronicle says Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce will face competition from Liverpool to sign Baines this summer.
A conflict between Sports Soccer tycoon Mike Ashley and Wigan chairman and JJB Sports founder Dave Whelan is believed to help Liverpool in the race to win his service.
A close friend of Baines said: “He is keen on Newcastle but feels that there could be issues between two of the main figures at the respective clubs.”
