A close pal told The Sun: “Fernando had a tremendous desire not to miss this game, he knows it means a lot to the fans.
“He wanted to be there for the team but he realised he wasn’t fit and was very disappointed.
“He is now targeting the trip to Istanbul although the game against Arsenal a week on Sunday is a more realistic prospect.”
