The 18-year-old has been a regular in the Liverpool squad since Kenny Dalglish took over as manager at the club.
“I’m a bit down at the moment but I’m just hoping now I can come back stronger,” Shelvey told the club’s official website.
“I am now going to take a 12-week rehabilitation and hopefully I’ll be back soon.”
