United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants to strengthen the left side and could make a move for Bale in January.
The 19-year-old has been struggling with injuries since joining Spurs from Southampton.
Bale joined Spurs for £5million, but United was also in the race to sing him at the time.
The former Southampton ace extended his contract with Spurs by four years in August.
