O’Neil joined the Hammers from Middlesbrough on Tuesday. The former Portsmouth star admits they face a battle to avoid relegation.
“I think that is one of the first things you think of when you think you are coming here and I do think they have a good chance of staying in the Premier League, definitely,” O’Neil told Sky Sports News.
“They have got a fantastic squad and if you put teams down on paper they shouldn’t be anywhere near where they are in the league.
“We have got a lot of work to do in the next four months, but I am desperate to try and help repay the manager and staff for showing faith in bringing me in and hopefully we can climb the table.”
