Shilton believes Beckham needs to stay in Italy for the sake of his England career.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star made his 108th cap for England against Spain on Wednesday, equalling Bobby Moore’s caps tally.
“I think he’s got to be playing at a different level to what he would do in the States. He’s not getting any younger and there’s a lot of competition around these days,” Shilton told FourFourTwo magazine.
“There’s been a lot of hype about the Milan thing. Wherever David goes there seems to be a lot of publicity about everything he does.
“We will have to wait and see what happens, whether he decides to try and make that a permanent move or whether he’s going back to the States.”
