Vermaelen penned a new deal earlier this season despite turmoil at a poor start to the season, showing a markedly different attitude and loyalty to the likes of Samir Nasri.
“I thought about it really long and of course I knew there were some doubts about my club”, Vermaelen told Arsenal’s official site.
“For me the most important thing is that I feel happy at the club.
“Another thing is that I have only really played one year because I was injured last year and I wanted to give something back to the fans.”
