Wenger said Arsenal had little choice but to let van Persie leave after the player engineered a move to one of their biggest rivals.
“We wanted to avoid it [the transfer] at all costs”, Wenger told Telefoot. “They have the advantage of having played against him and so they knew his class.
“He’s an outstanding player in every sense.”
