Atletico Madrid condemn journalist attack

Los Colchoneros were eliminated from the competition after a tough encounter in Portugal.

“Club Atletico de Madrid would like to show its disgust and condemn the attack suffered by several Spanish journalists and an Atletico supporter who was accompanying them in Oporto on Wednesday night, after the match that Atlético de Madrid played at the Estadio do Dragao,” the Spanish club statement read.

“Late Wednesday night and on into the early hours of Thursday morning, Javier Amaro (Radio Marca), Miguel Martín Talavera (Radio Marca), Luis Aznar (Marca) and José Antonio García Sirvent (Mundo Deportivo) had to take refuge in a hotel (for nearly three hours) after being chased by extreme Oporto supporters, who threatened them violently and threw all types of objects at the Spanish journalists. The Portuguese Police had to intervene to guarantee the safety of the journalists.

“Club Atlético de Madrid would like to show its support to this group of professionals of the media, while at the same time severely condemning the events that occurred, and celebrating the fact that, luckily, none of the journalists suffered any harm.”
