The centre-half has played in every minute of Birmingham’s Premier League season so far.
McLeish said: “If you are talking about England being the next step for him, then he needs another season like this one.
“For international football, you look for different attributes.
“Nothing will stick out more than Roger enjoying another top, solid, consistent season.
“As well as he has done, there is the capacity for him to improve.
“There’s no reason why he can’t be mentioned in the same breath as some of the guys that have been lauded this season, like Gary Cahill and Ryan Shawcross.”
