Darren is the son of Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
The 36-year-old was also linked with the job in the summer, but the club decided to move for Iain Dowie.
A source close to Ferguson told News of the World: “We know they have kept an eye on him. The next few weeks could be interesting.”
