Jones is expected to complete a move to Manchester United within hours, according to reports.
Reports have also claimed Jones held talks with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger last night, before deciding to join United.
“We were in for Phil Jones, along with five other top clubs,” Redknapp told Sky Sports News. “I think everybody was in for the boy.
“I think he is a lad who can one day go on to be an England centre half and maybe a captain of England. I think he is that good.
“He is a great signing for Manchester United.
“I think you will find almost all the top teams were bidding for him and he had the choice and has made up his mind that Manchester United is the right move for him.
“He has got everything, he is quick and strong and looks a great lad. I think Alex has pulled off a real coup there.”
