The England skipper said: “There’s a fear of failure. It’s been like that for the last couple of years.
“It’s not something you can put your finger on. I don’t think we’ll be able to go out there and completely change it overnight.
“At club level, the lads feel free and can express themselves. That’s something the manager and myself are trying to bring out in the camp.”
Terry added: “As the Andorra game went on last time, the booing got worse and it made us go into our shells even more.
“We came into the game wanting to score early but we were getting frustrated, the fans were getting frustrated and it was getting more and more difficult. This time we’ll need everyone behind us moving in the same direction.
“But what we understand is the fans’ frustration and disappointment.
“We know as a group of players that we’ve under-achieved in the last couple of years and we want to put that right as much as anyone else.
“As captain I have a lot of pride and when the team don’t play well and the fans boo us off it really hurts deep inside.”
