The Metro says Fergie is ready to make a bid after both Karim Benzema and Franck Ribery have snubbed moves to Old Trafford.
Fergie is keen on bringing in several players up front, following the departures of Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo.
United are also closing in on signing former Real Madrid and Liverpool striker Michael Owen.
