Weekend round-up; Real suffer shock defeat, Paris Saint Germain still searching for first win

Madrid now have one point from two games in La Liga, and are already five behind Barcelona, whom they lost to in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup earlier this week.

The Catalans were not at their best as they rallied to win 2-1 at Osasuna. There is a Madrid team in second place in La Liga currently after Rayo Vallecano beat Real Betis 2-1. Newly promoted Deportivo are third following a 3-3 draw at Valencia, Real Mallorca drew 1-1 with Malaga to go fourth, and Sevila drew 1-1 at Granada.

Paris St Germain are still searching for a first win of the season in France after drawing their third successive game of the season, 0-0 at home to Bordeaux. They are six points behind fierce rivals Marseille, who won the south coast derby with champions Montpellier 1-0. 2010 champions Lille drew 2-2 at Nice, whilst Lyon bottled their 100% record with a 1-1 stalemate at Evian. St Etienne claimed an impressive 4-0 win over Brest. Toulouse won 1-0 against Nancy, whilst Reims won by the same score against Sochaux.

English champions Man City were held 2-2 in a thrilling match against Liverpool on Sunday. Man Utd got their first points in a 3-2 win over Fulham, with Chelsea beating Newcastle 2-0 to retain their 100% record. Swansea’s superb start continued with a 3-0 win over West Ham, whilst Everton also beat Aston Villa 3-1 to maintain an 100% record. Arsenal drew 0-0 at Stoke City, Tottenham drew 1-1 at home to West Brom and Wigan beat Southampton 2-0.

In Italy champions Juventus got off to a flying start on the opening day of the season with a 2-0 win over Andrea Pirlo, while Inter Milan impressed in a 3-0 win over Pescara. Napoli beat Palermo by the same score. AC Milan were stunned 1-0 at home by newly promoted Sampdoria, whilst Roma drew 2-2 with Catania and Lazio defeated Atalanta 1-0. Chievo beat Bologna and Genoa defeated Cagliari, both by 2-0 scores. Siena and Torino drew 0-0 and Fiorentina won 2-1 against Udinese.

The opening round of the Bundesliga saw champions Borussia Dortmund win 2-1 at Werder Bremen, whilst Bayern Munich beat Greuther Furth 3-0. Borussia Moenchengladbach, last year’s surprise package, won 2-1 against Hoffenheim, whilst promoted Eintracht Frankfurt won by the same score against Bayer Leverkusen. Schalke drew 2-2 with Hannover, and another promoted side, Fortuna Dusseldorf, beat Augsburg 2-0. Nurnberg won 1-0 at Hamburg, Mainz and Freiburg shared a 1-1 draw and Wolsburg claimed an impressive 1-0 win at Stuttgart.

Benfica claimed a 5-0 victory at Vitoria Setubal in Portugal, laying down a marker for the season as champions Porto also won convincingly, 4-0 against Guimares. Braga beat Beira Mar 3-1.

Russian champions Zenit lost their unbeaten record with a surprise 2-1 home defeat against Rubin Kazan. Terek Grozny continued their good early season form with a 2-1 win at home to Spartak Moscow, to go second, whilst CSKA beat Krylya Sovetov 3-0. Anzhi Makhachkala won 4-2 against Saransk, and Dimano won the Moscow derby 3-2 at Lokomotiv.

The Istanbul derby in Turkey ended 3-3 between Besiktas and Galatasaray, and 2011 champions Fenerbahce beat Gaziantepspor 3-0.

In Holland, champions Ajax won 5-0 against NAC Breda, PSV beat Gronigen 3-1, Twente won at NEC by the same score, while Heerenveen and AZ drew 0-0.

There were a number of intriguing derby clashes in Brazil at the weekend. Ronaldinho struck a superb goal as he rolled back the years to help Atletico Mineiro go back to the top of the Brazilian league against Belo Horizonte rivals Cruzeiro. Ronaldinho ran half the length of the field before firing home, only to see Cruzeiro net a late equaliser to secure a 2-2 draw. Elsewhere, Neymar scored two as Santos beat Palmeiras 2-1, and Fluminense defeated Rio rivals Vasco de Gama by the same scoreline. The derby between São Paulo and Corinthians also ended 2-1, as the Copa Libertadores champions went down to defeat, whilst Gremio beat Internacional 1-0 in the Porto Alegre derby.

In Argentina River Plate drew 0-0 at home to San Lorenzo, Velez Sarsfield claimed a 3-0 win at San Martin and Arsenal beat Independiente 2-0 to continue the Buenos Aires giants’ woes. Boca Juniors beat Union 2-1.

Universidad de Chile lost 5-2 at Union Espanola in Chile, with Colo Colo triumphing 3-1 against Cobreloa. In Mexico the big game between Guadalajara and Monterrey was won 2-1 by the visitors. Cruz Azul won 1-0 at Pumas. North of the border in America LA Galaxy claimed a 2-0 win over FC Dallas, Seattle Sounders crushed Chivas USA 6-2 and New York Red Bulls were held 1-1 by Sporting Kansas.
