Bayern win Champions League, Benfica lose another final, America rule in Mexico

Mario Mandzukic had put Bayern ahead, before Ilkay Gundogan equalised from the penalty spot. Arjen Robben won the game with a late finish to banish Bayern’s memories of defeat in last year’s final.

In Spain at the weekend Real Madrid drew 3-3 with Real Sociedad, hurting the Basque side’s Champions League hopes .They now need Valencia to drop points in their final game of the season and to win their own if they hope to finish fourth. Valencia beat Granada 1-0 to go above the Basque side. Atletico Madrid drew 0-0 with Real Mallorca and Barcelona beat Espanyol 2-0.

There are still no relegated teams in La Liga going into the final round of games, with Real Mallorca, Real Zaragoza, Celta Vigo and Deportivo la Coruna fighting for their lives – only one can survive.

In France Olympique Lyonnais claimed the final Champions League spot with a 2-0 win over Rennes. Paris St Germain, the champions, beat Lorient 3-1, and Marseille drew 0-0 with Reims. Nice finished fourth after beating Ajaccio and Lille miss out on Europe after drawing with St Etienne 1-1. Troyes were relegated after losing 2-1 to Valenciennes, and they will go into Ligue 2 with Nancy and Brest.

Lazio won the first ever all Roman Italian Cup final with a 1-0 win over Roma, who had finished above their victors in the league. But neither qualified for Europe via the league, although Lazio will now play in the Europa League.

In Portugal Benfica suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Vitoria Guimaraes to lose the Portuguese Cup final. It meant they finish the season trophyless, having looked set to win the league, Europa League and domestic up. In Germany Hoffenheim beat Kaiserslautern 3-1 in the first leg of the promotion/relegation play off for the Bundesliga.

In Mexico America won the Clausura title after a stunning win over Cruz Azul. Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, they fell 1-0 down in the second and then had a man sent off. But a last minute goal from a corner and then an even later header from their goalkeeper secured a stunning 2-1 win for 10 man America, who then won on penalties to secure a remarkable win.

In Argentina Newell’s Old Boys remain top of the league after crushing Boca Juniors 4-0. River Plate’s 3-0 win over Atletico Rafaela keeps them second, with Lanus in third despite a 3-1 loss at San Martin. Godoy Cruz drew 1-1 at Racing Club to stay fourth.

The Brazilian league got underway again this weekend with Neymar saying goodbye to Santos before his move to Barcelona in a 0-0 draw with Flamengo. Champions Fluminense won 2-1 against Atletico Paranaense and Goias were thrashed 5-0 by Cruzeiro. Atletico Mineiro lost 2-1 at Coritiba, Gremio beat Nautico 2-0, Sao Paolo beat Ponte Preta by the same score and Botafogo drew 1-1 at Corinthians. Vasco de Gama beat Portuguesa 1-0.
