Everton have withdrawn from the race to sign Manchester United forward Ethan Wheatley, opening the door for Lincoln City.

The 20-year-old had been identified as a development signing capable of challenging for senior minutes.

The Daily Mail reports that Everton have redirected their limited transfer funds towards four immediate first-team additions. A proposed package involving an initial fee, add-ons and a future sell-on percentage will therefore not be pursued by the Merseyside club.

Lincoln are now positioned to revive the move as they search for extra firepower. Wheatley’s physical profile and potential could make him an attractive long-term investment.

The 6ft 3in striker has built a strong scoring record throughout United’s academy system. He has also gained valuable EFL experience during loan spells with Northampton Town and Bradford City.

Wheatley represents England at Under-20 level, but his route into Manchester United’s senior side remains crowded. A permanent move could provide the regular football needed to accelerate his progress.
