Elsewhere Athletic Bilbao beat Valladolid 2-0, Levante overcame Espanyol 3-2, Rayo Vallecano drew 0-0 with Sevilla, Celta Vigo beat Osasuna 2-0 and Real Mallorca won 1-0 against Real Sociedad. Deportivo la Coruna drew 1-1 with Getafe, and Malaga are second after winning 1-0 at Real Zaragoza.
In Italy Juventus are one of four teams with a perfect record after two rounds of the season, following a stunning 4-1 win at Udinese. Sampdoria beat Siena 2-1, Napoli beat Fiorentina by the same score and Lazio overcame Palermo 3-0 to maintain 100% starts.
In the weekend’s biggest game Roma impressively beat Inter Milan 3-1 at the San Siro, a result compounded for the Nerazzuri by former striker Giampaolo Pazzini netting a hat trick for AC Milan in a 3-1 win at Bologna.
Parma beat Chievo 2-0, Torino beat Pescara 3-0, Catania beat Genoa 3-2 and Cagliari drew 1-1 with Atalanta.
Chelsea remained top in England despite not playing and a 4-1 drubbing by Atletico Madrid in the European Super Cup. They are the only team with an 100% record from three games in England, after Swansea drew 2-2 with Sunderland and Everton lost 2-0 at West Brom.
Manchester United came from 2-1 down late on to beat Southampton 3-2, with Robin van Persie scoring a hat trick. The Dutchman’s former club Arsenal beat Liverpool 2-0 away from home, and still have not conceded a goal this season. Manchester City laboured to a 3-1 win over QPR, West Ham beat Fulham 3-0, Wigan drew 2-2 with Stoke, Newcastle drew 1-1 against Aston Villa and Tottenham were held 1-1 by Norwich.
Paris St Germain finally won their first match of the season against the team many expect to push them closest for the title, Lille. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is still the only player to have scored for them so far this season after netting both in a 2-1 win. Marseille beat Rennes 3-1 to continue their perfect start, Lyon are second after winning 3-2 at home to Valenciennes and Lorient’s impressive start continued with them sat third after beating Nancy 3-0.
Bordeaux and Toulouse are still unbeaten despite 1-1 draws at home to Nice and Reims respectively. Champions Montpellier won their first game of the season, 3-1 at Sochaux, who are rooted to the foot of the table. Pablo Correa was fired by Evian after they were beaten 2-0 at Ajaccio, St Etienne won 3-0 at Bastia and Troyes lost 2-1 to Brest.
There were some big results in Germany too, with Bayern Munich crushing Stuttgart 6-1 to go top of the table. Hannover shocked Wolfsburg with a 4-0 win away from home, and Hoffenheim were similarly embarrassed by the same score at home to newly promoted Eintracht Frankfurt. Schalke won 3-1 at home to Augbsburg and champions Borussia Dortmund drew 1-1 at Nuremberg. Fortuna Dusseldorf held Borussia Moenchengladbach to a goalless draw, and Bayer Leverkusen won 2- 0at home to Freiburg. Greuther Furth won 1-0 at Mainz, and Werder Bremen continued Hamburg’s woe with a 2-0 home win.
Dutch champions Ajax were held 2-2 by Heerenveen, Twente beat Venlo 1-0, PSV thrashed AZ 5-1 and Feyenoord lost 1-0 at Vitesse Arnhem. Galatasaray, the Turkish champions, beat Bursaspor 3-2, and Fenerbahce drew 0-0 at Sivasspor. Besiktas beat Karabukspor 3-0. In Portugal Benfica won 3-0 against Nacional and Porto defeated Olhanense3-2.
Atletico Mineiro’s long unbeaten run in Brazil was brought to an end by a 1-0 loss at Corinthians. Fluminense drew 2-2 at Figuierense and are level on points with the leaders, having played a game more. Gremio are third after a 0-0 draw at Palmeiras, Vasco beat Portuguesa 2-0 and Sao Paulo lost 1-0 at Bahia. Internacional crushed Flamengo 4-1 and Santos lost 2-1 at Sport, with Coritiba going down 2-0 at Botafogo.
