PSG and Juventus defeats open up title races in France and Italy

The Parisians had been six points clear of Lyon and Marseille, but have seen the lead cut to just three now after Lyon thrashed Bordeaux 4-0 away from home. Marseille won 1-0 at home to Valenciennes, and play the Parisians next weekend. Toulouse drew 2-2 with Troyes, Lille beat Rennes 2-0, Montpellier beat Nancy 1-0 and Lorient overcame Evian 2-1.

Juventus were stunned 1-0 by Roma, who won their first league game of 2013 at the Stadio Olimpico. The Bianconeri are four points ahead of Napoli now, who missed the chance to close the gap to two points after drawing 0-0 with Sampdoria. Lazio can close in with victory at Siena on Monday, whilst AC Milan beat Parma 2-1 and Inter were thrashed 4-1 by Fiorentina. Udinese lost 1-0 to Genoa.

Things remain as they were in Spain where Barcelona came from 1-0 down to beat Granada 2-1 thanks to two goals from Leo Messi, who struck for the fourteenth league game in a row. Atletico Madrid beat Valladolid 3-0, and Real Madrid beat Rayo Vallecano 2-0 despite going down to 10 men. Malaga beat Athletic Bilbao 1-0 to stay fourth, with Valencia on their heels after a 2-0 win over Real Mallorca. Real Sociedad were held -1 by Levante.

In Germany Bayern Munich won 2-0 at Wolfsburg to maintain their commanding 15 point lead in the Bundesliga. They have conceded just one goal away from home all season and dropped just two points on the road. Borussia Dortmund beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 to continue their attempt to retain the title, whilst Bayer Leverkusen won 2-1 against Aubsburg. Schalke drew 2-2 at Mainz, Freiburg won 3-2 at Werder Bremen, Stuttgart won 1-0 against Hoffenheim and Hannover drew 2-2 with Nurnberg.

Galatasaray continue their march towards retaining the title in Turkey with a 2-1 win at Akhisar Belediyespor. Fenerbahce are second after beating Trabzonspor 3-0, leaping above Besiktas, held 1-1 by Gaziantetspor. Benfica were indebted to a last gasp goal to beat Academica Coimbra 1-0, to keep them level on points with FC Porto, who won 2-0 against Beira Mar. Sporting Lisbon won 3-2 against Gil Vicente.

PSV won 2-1 against Utrecht to stay top, ahead of Ajax, who beat Waalwijk 2-0. Twente drew 1-1 with Willem II, and Feyenoord lost 3-2 at Zwolle. Vitesse beat Gronigen 2-0. Olympiakos remain 16 points clear in Greece after beating Xanthi 2-0, whilst Panathinaikos remain languished in ninth after losing 1-0 at Aris Saloniki.

In Argentina Velez Sarsfield lost 1-0 to Independiente, River Plate beat Estudiantes by the same score and Boca Juniors were held 0-0 by Tigre. Guarani’s 5-0 win over Deportivo Capiata puts them top in Paraguay, and Universidad Catolica stay top of the Chilean league after a 4-2 win over Antofagasta.
