Weekend review: Madrid and Real suffer shock defeats

Barcelona beat Getafe 4-1 to move eight points clear of the champions, and Tito Vilanova’s side have yet to drop a point in the league this season. That caused Jose Mourinho to round on his players as they struggle to get their season going.

Elsewhere Valencia overcame Celta Vigo 2-1, whilst Malaga enjoyed a 3-1 win over Levante. Espanyol drew with Athletic Bilbao 3-3, Deportivo and Granada also drew 1-1, Mallorca and Osasuna shared a 1-1 draw as well, while Real Sociedad beat Real Zaragoza 2-0. Atletico Madrid overcame Rayo Vallecano 4-3.

The Premier League assumed a familiar feel as Manchester United thrashed Wigan 4-0 to move a point behind league leaders Chelsea, who were held 0-0 by QPR to lose their 100% record. Arsenal are up to third after beating Southampton 6-1, while Man City remain in the top four following a 1-1 draw with Stoke City. Swansea and West Brom lost their first games of the season, 2-0 and 3-0 respectively to Aston Villa and Fulham. Liverpool drew 1-1 with Sunderland as they continue to search for their first win of the season. Tottenham won at Reading 3-1.

AC Milan were stunned in Italy as Atalanta beat them 1-0 at the San Siro, to leave Massimo Allegri with all kinds of problems after his team’s stuttering start to the season. Palermo drew 1-1 with Cagliari. Juventus came from behind to beat Genoa 3-1, whilst Roma were beaten 3-2 by Bologna at home. Lazio won 3-1 at Chievo, Napoli won by the same score against Parma, Fiorentina overcame Catania 2-0, Siena and Udinese drew 2-2 and Sampdoria won 3-2 at Pescara.

German champions Borussia Dortmund beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 as they warmed up for their clash with Ajax in the Champions League this week. Bayern Munich beat Mainz 3-1 to continue their 100% start to the new season. Hannover’s impressive start continued with a 3-2 win over Werder Bremen, and Schalke won 2-0 at Greuther Furth to continue their good run. Borussia Moenchengladbach suffered a 3-2 reverse at home to Nuremberg, while Wolfsburg were held 0-0 by Augsburg and Stuttgart by the same score at home to Fortuna Dusseldorf. Hamburg lost 3-2 at Eintracht Frankfurt and Freiburg beat Hoffenheim 5-3.

French champions Montpellier suffered another defeat as they remain some way of the pace in this season’s title race. They lost 3-1 at Reims. Paris St Germain overcame Toulouse 2-0, while Lille were held to a 1-1 draw by Troyes. Evian got back to winning ways, 3-0 against Bastia, Nice beat Brest 4-2 and St Etienne lost 1-0 surprisingly at home to Sochaux. Bordeaux drew 0-0 at Valenciennes. Marseille are still 100% after beating Nancy 1-0, while Lyon beat Ajaccio 2-0 and Lorient continued their strong start with a 2-1 win at Rennes.

In Greece Panathinaikos suffered a shock 1-0 loss at Panthrakikos, while Olympiakos beat PAS Giannena 2-1 away.

In Holland Twente beat Willem II to make it five wins from five at the start of the season. Ajax, the champions, beat Vitesse 2-0. Feyenoord won 2-0 against Zwolle, whilst Den Haag shocked Heerenveen 3-1. AZ beat Roda JC 4-0 and PSV lost 1-0 at Utrecht.

There was also a shock in Russia, as Zenit St Petersburg were beaten 2-0 by Terek Grozny at home, meaning the latter go top of the league. Lokomotiv Moscow are third after beating Rubin Kazan 1-0, and Spartak Moscow drew 2-2 at Kuban Krasnodar.

Turkish champions Galatasaray won 4-0 at Antalyaspor, and Bursaspor won 4-1 at home to Karabukspor.

In Brazil leaders Fluminense suffered a shock 2-1 home defeat by Goianense, while Sao Paulo were defeated 3-1 by Portuguesa. Flamengo and Gremio drew 1-1, Cruzeiro and Vasco de Gama shared the same result, Coritiba lost 2-1 at home to Santos and Athletico Mineiro stumbled again with a 1-0 loss at Nautico. Corinthians beat Palmeiras 2-0 to leave them mired in relegation trouble.
